Description

Here at the edge of a lake in a shed in a small Irish town, the ordinary is made extraordinary. Within is the laboratory of PJ Rigney, boundary-pushing begetter of hand-made spirits who slow distills gin with natures finest oriental botanicals and gunpowder tea.

A 70cl bottle of the splendid Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin from Ireland’s Shed Distillery. Made with an array of botanicals such as juniper, angelica, orris, caraway, coriander, meadowsweet, cardamom and star anise as well as vapour infused oriental lemon and lime, fresh grapefruit and gunpowder tea! It makes a smashing Martini and is tasty with tonic too.

ORIGINALITY ISN’T JUST
ABOUT INNOVATION

It’s about bringing together unrelated things for the first time. Seeing the possibilities that others don’t. That takes a willingness to set aside the tried and tested solutions and venture into uncharted territory.

It’s the mark of a truly curious mind.

THE JACKALOPE

NOTHING COULD
BE MORE FITTING

A creature of such mystery and wonder – the mythological progeny of a jackrabbit (not a real rabbit) and an American antelope (not a real antelope).

Conceived in a lightning storm, says the legend, the jackalope appears in Drumshanbo at will, as in a dream. And then: gone in a flurry of feet and antlers. It’s little wonder that the jackalope has come to symbolise all that is remarkable about Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin.

Two disparate cultures and traditions brought together in a singular flash of inspiration.

It couldn’t be any other creature.

GUNPOWDER TEA

GUNPOWDER TEA & EXOTIC
ORIENTAL BOTANICALS

This is a green tea that has been slowly dried, the delicate leaves then carefully rolled into shiny pellets. The flavour is bold and bright with a slight spicy freshness.

Gunpowder Irish Gin is an oriental-inspired spirit from The Shed Distillery in Co Leitrim that’s setting the world alight. Taking its name from one of the signature botanicals, slowly dried Gunpowder tea, the recipe also includes lime, lemon and grapefruit.

Gunpowder Tea is so called because each tea leaf has been rolled into a small ball, reminiscent of gunpowder. It’s usually made with green tea leaves and it’s that special ingredient that gives Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin its name.

But beyond that, Gunpowder Gin is a complex array of botanicals from a number of traditions. Three kinds of citrus fruit: grapefruit, lemon and makrut lime join the tea and are vapor distilled. The remaining ingredients, including Macedonian juniper, are macerated and distilled in a pot still.

There’s the legendary American Jackelope on the bottle; Chinese tea as a signature botanical, but Gunpowder Gin is made in Drumshanbo, Ireland.
